About Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events that occur before age 18. They include experiencing violence, abuse, or neglect, witnessing violence, or growing up in a household with substance misuse, mental health problems, or instability. Understanding your ACE score is an important step in your healing journey.

Why ACEs Matter for Your Health

  • ACEs are common across all populations and demographics
  • They can have lasting effects on physical and mental health
  • The more ACEs someone experiences, the higher their risk for health issues like depression, anxiety, heart disease, and substance abuse
  • Understanding your ACE score can help guide your trauma recovery and healing journey

The ACE Study and Trauma Research

The landmark ACE Study was conducted by the CDC and Kaiser Permanente from 1995 to 1997. It found a strong relationship between the number of ACEs a person experienced and various health and social problems later in life. Modern trauma research continues to validate these findings and develop effective healing approaches.
